Composting

Composting an easy way to recycle organic matter in order to reduce your rubbish. When added to your garden, composted material promotes soil fertility, moisture retention, and encourages plant growth. However, when it is added to the landfill it produces harmful greenhouse gases that need to be contained and managed.

Composting is easy and can be done at home, school or at work. Choose a way that suits you best, whether you are in a flat or have a large section - there are many ways to compost food scraps and garden rubbish.

For people who don't want to compost at home the councils accept certain green waste at their transfer stations for a small charge and turn in into compost.

There is a good financial reason to compost too, two cubic meters of green waste would cost you about $100 to landfill, but if brought in on a large trailer the charge is about $10*.

Last year over 7000 tonnes of green waste brought to Nursery Road for composting.

*charges vary at the different transfer stations see green waste for more details.
