The overall
amount of material taken through the gate at Nursery Road in 2005 was
42986 tonnes, three quarters of this ended up in the land fill.
Carterton and Masterton
Councils handle/control about 11% of the waste stream (9.5% rubbish and
1.6% of the recycling). The remainder of the
waste stream is brought to Nursery Road by commercial operators and
private individuals.

All refuse is land filled at
Nursery Road until October 2006. From 1st October refuse will be
transported to a modern land fill at Bonny Glen, near Marton.
Nursery Road will then only accept clean fill as part of the remediation
process for the land fill.
Measurements over the last seven years show a growth in the amount of
refuse discarded by the community. Since the 2001 census the
population of the two districts has grown slightly but the amount of
waste to land fill has almost doubled from 8709 tonnes to 16752 tonnes.
To ship this quantity of waste to Bonny Glen will cost the community
over $2million next year.
Refuse trend since 1999

In 2005/06 73% of the rubbish from
households and businesses was collected by commercial collectors.
Of this almost two thirds of this rubbish was produced by businesses.
